Slider Windows
Sliders, horizontal sliders, gliders are all windows that have sashes operating in a horizontal direction along a track or channel in the sill of the frame. Because the weight of the sashes is born by the sill these windows typically can be used in larger sizes than hung or projected windows which depend upon balances or hinges to support the sash weight.
The sashes may have rollers or glide pads to facilitate their operation. In most cases the sashes are inserted or removed by raising them into the pocket formed by the head of the frame and then aligning them with or pulling them away from the track or channel.
Because the sashes ride on the sill and use the legs of the sill for sealing the sashes it is necessary to drain or weep any water that accumulates in the sill. This does require some minor maintenance to ensure the sill is kept free of dirt and debris.
Sliders typically come in three configurations: Single, double and three-light.
Single sliders have one operable sash and one fixed lite that is often glazed directly into the main frame.
Double sliders have two operable sashes although one is usually designated as the primary operable sash
Three-light sliders come with either one (usually the center) or two (usually the ends) as operable sashes.
