Picture Window
The Picture window, also called a non-venting, non-operable or fixed-pane window window, consists of one light of glass glazed directly into the window frame or a sash set into the window frame. They are they windows that cannot be opened.
Picture windows can be made in larger sizes than operable windows since the weight of the glass can be supported directly by the framing in the structure. This is because no operable hardware is required.
The larger size availability of picture windows allow them to be used in situations where natural lighting or a feeling of openness is desirable. They are sometimes employed to provide an unobstucted view of features outside of the structure.
Because a fixed window will not open, it often provides the best protection against air and water infiltration. This makes it a good choice for areas that are difficult to access, but offer the opportunity for natural light. It also is a relatively secure window as usually the only way to penetrate it is to break the glass.
Picture windows that are not 90 degree angles in all four corners are referred to as architectural shapes. There are many variations with curved sides, multiple angles, asymetrical forms, etc.
One drawback to picture window is that the exterior side must be cleaned from the outside of the structure.
